Payroll startup to industry leader: Co-founder John Wegert reflects on 40 Years of Aurion
Hear from our co-founder John Wegert as he reflects on 40 years of Aurion and the secret behind a payroll startup's success.
When John Wegert helped co-found Aurion at just 26 years old, there was no roadmap for what the next 40 years would hold. What he did know was that a small dedicated team of passionate innovators was determined to build something exceptional.
Founded in 1985, Aurion was built on a belief that great software should evolve, adapt, and stand the test of time. Taking on competitors many times their size, the team built their business around a set of core principles that would guide every decision they made.
Four decades later, Aurion has grown from a small startup into one of Australia’s leading people and payroll technology providers, supporting thousands of organisations across Australia and beyond.
As Aurion celebrates its 40th anniversary, John reflects on the decisions, people, and mindset that shaped the company’s journey and continue to drive its future.
“We have remained true to our core principles and never deviated from them. To do that for 40 years is quite an accomplishment.”
– John Wegert, Co-Founder, Aurion
Standing the test of time
For John, Aurion’s 40th anniversary represents proof that the vision, resilience and decisions made in the company’s earliest days stood the test of time.
Across four decades, the people and payroll market has transformed dramatically. Technology evolved, customer expectations changed, and competitors that once dominated the market disappeared, while Aurion continued to grow and evolve.
“We’ve survived the really rough, highly competitive world of the 1980s, 1990s and 2000s when the bulk of our competition has not.”
– John Wegert, Co-Founder, Aurion
John recalls how Aurion entered a crowded market filled with established players, often competing against organisations much larger than itself. Looking back, he is proud not only of the company’s longevity, but of the determination that helped it succeed.
“We were a small team of very talented and motivated individuals, and we took on all comers. We punched above our weight.”
– John Wegert, Co-Founder, Aurion
That mindset became a defining characteristic of Aurion. While others adapted to market pressures by constantly changing direction, Aurion remained focused on building a product that could evolve without compromising its foundations.
The secret behind 40 years of success
When asked what he’s most proud of from the early days, John doesn’t talk about contracts won or milestones achieved. Instead, he points to the decisions the founding team made from the very beginning.
“Pivotal decisions were taken from the outset, and we reinforced them daily, weekly, and monthly.”
– John Wegert, Co-Founder, Aurion
While Aurion’s software was initially used by sole government organisations, the team’s vision was much bigger. They were committed to creating software that was configurable, reusable and built to serve organisations of all sizes and complexities.
Rather than developing multiple versions of the product for different customers, they focused on building a single solution that could adapt to changing needs without losing its integrity.
“We were building a perfect mousetrap that could be configured for all solutions, rather than rebuilding the product for every new customer.”
– John Wegert, Co-Founder, Aurion
That commitment to configurability, reusability, and strong development standards became the foundation of Aurion’s success. It enabled the platform to evolve alongside changing technologies, customer expectations, and market demands while remaining true to its core architecture.
For John, success was never about chasing quick wins. It was about making decisions that would stand the test of time.
Forty years later, those original design principles remain embedded in Aurion today, forming the foundation for the innovation and growth that followed.
Looking ahead to the next chapter
While John’s reflections are rooted in Aurion’s history, his excitement for the future is just as strong.
He sees significant opportunities ahead as Aurion continues to evolve its technology, expand into new sectors and help organisations solve increasingly complex workforce challenges.
One area that particularly excites him is the work being done to strengthen Aurion’s offering for the education sector, opening the door to significant new opportunities for growth.
“That could be a springboard into a vast market segment. As always, the changes being made for this sector are fully configurable.”
– John Wegert, Co-Founder, Aurion
For John, it’s another example of Aurion adapting to meet changing market needs while remaining true to the principles that have guided the business from the beginning.
He’s equally enthusiastic about the innovation happening across Aurion’s product teams, particularly the development of new capabilities that help organisations automate processes, streamline operations and get more value from their technology investments.
At the same time, John believes the future is already taking shape through Aurion 12 and the next generation of product development.
“It’s already an extraordinary product and, incredibly, it will eventually surpass Aurion 11.”
– John Wegert, Co-Founder, Aurion
To some, that may sound ambitious. To John, it’s proof that the spirit of innovation that fuelled Aurion’s earliest years is alive and well.
Carrying the Aurion mindset forward
When asked what he hopes future employees and leaders will carry forward, John’s answer extends far beyond technology.
For him, Aurion’s success has always been rooted in its people.
He hopes future generations preserve the qualities that helped transform a small team of founders into a thriving organisation. The courage to make difficult decisions, the discipline to stay focused on long-term goals and the trust that comes from working together towards a shared vision.
“The strength of character that is the Aurion mindset.”
– John Wegert, Co-Founder, Aurion
John believes Aurion’s greatest achievements have never been the result of individuals working alone. Instead, they’ve come from talented teams recognising each other’s strengths and trusting one another to deliver exceptional outcomes.
Today, those teams look very different from the eight people who gathered in Aurion’s early days. The company has grown, specialised and expanded, but the same collaborative spirit remains.
Whether in product development, account management, support, sales, or marketing, John sees the same sense of commitment that has defined Aurion from the beginning.
“Retain the faith and confidence in the teams.”
– John Wegert, Co-Founder, Aurion
Alongside that culture, he believes Aurion will never lose sight of the software design principles and customer-focused mindset that have served the business for four decades.
For John, these foundations aren’t simply part of Aurion’s history. They’re the blueprint for its future.
Honouring the past, shaping the future
After 40 years, countless milestones, technological shifts, acquisitions and new beginnings, John believes Aurion’s greatest achievement isn’t simply its longevity. It’s the fact that the company has continued to grow while remaining true to the principles established in 1986.
Today, a new generation of employees, leaders and innovators are shaping Aurion’s future, building on the foundations laid by the original founders and continuing the journey they started four decades ago.
For a founder who helped build Aurion at just 26 years old, there could be no greater achievement than seeing the company continue to grow while staying true to the values that shaped it from the beginning.
“We’re building Aurion 12 while extending Aurion 11, and all the time maintaining our founding principles.”
– John Wegert, Co-Founder, Aurion
